Retail sales in Taiwan increased 2.9% year-on-year in December 2024, up from a revised 2.1% rise in November. This was the second straight month of growth, driven by higher sales of textiles and clothing (8.4% vs 2.8% in November), pharmaceutical and medical goods and cosmetics (8.6% vs 5.5%), cultural and recreation goods (5.8% vs 5%), information and communications equipment and electrical household appliances (5.1% vs 4.4%), and other goods (14.2% vs 14%). Conversely, sales growth slowed for general merchandise (4.7% vs 5.8%), food, beverages and tobacco (0.6% vs 3.2%), household appliances and goods (3.2% vs 4.9%), and construction materials (4.1% vs 13.2%). At the same time, declines were seen in sales of fuel and related products (-4.5% vs -4.1%) and motor vehicles, motorcycles and related parts (-1.8% vs -4.1%). Monthly, retail trade dropped 1.4%, after a revised 6.9% gain in November. For the whole year of 2024, retail sales rose 2.6%, slowing from a 6.2% growth in 2023.
