Car sales in Thailand plunged 31.34% year-on-year to 42,309 units in November 2024, following a 36% slump in the previous month, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). This marked the eighteenth consecutive month of decline, due to a surge in household debt, including bad car debt and significant tightening of loans. In October, the FTI once again revised its domestic sales target for 2024 to 450,000 units, down from an earlier estimate of 550,00 units. Meanwhile, total car production slumped 28.2% year-on-year to 117,251 units in November. For the first eleven months of the year, car production plunged 20.1% to 1.36 million units compared with the same period in 2023. Last month, the FTI lowered its car production forecast for 2024 to 1.5 million vehicles, from the earlier estimate of 1.7 million vehicles, marking the lowest target seen since 2021. In 2023, Thailand produced 1.84 million vehicles.
