The BSE Sensex closed about 0.5% down at 73,847.2 on Wednesday, reversing Tuesday's 1.5% advance, as a global sell-off ensued after Trump’s tariffs took effect. The latest U.S. reciprocal tariffs, including a hefty 104% levy on Chinese imports, took effect earlier in the day, leaving investors concerned about their impact on inflation, interest rates, and global growth. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India reduced its key policy rates for the second straight meeting and also changed its monetary policy stance to accommodative, as widely expected. Governor Sanjay Malhotra expressed more concern over growth than inflation, lowering the GDP forecast for FY2025-26 to 6.5% from 6.7%, and revising inflation to 4% from 4.2%. On the corporate front, sectors like finance, pharmaceuticals, and tech were hit hard, while consumer durables saw gains.
