European stocks closed mixed on Monday at the start of a week of thin trading due to the Christmas holidays, as markets continued to assess the outlook of rates from the Fed and the impact that tariffs from the US would have on European manufacturing demand. The Eurozone’s STOXX 50 fell 0.3% to close at 4,850, but the broader, pan-European STOXX 600 gained 0.1% to close at 503. Regarding the ECB’s policy, the central bank’s President Christine Lagarde commented on Monday that the Eurozone is "very close" to achieving the central bank's medium-term inflation target. German auto giants were among the sharpest losers of the session, with Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen sinking between 2% and 0.8%. In turn, Prosus and Adyen lost 1.5% to weigh on the tech sector. Outside the STOXX 50, pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk added 5% to trim the 20% plunge on Friday after disappointing test results for its obesity drug Cagrisema, driving the STOXX 600 to close slightly higher.
